Why I Run:
In 2018, I took a job working as a patient care technician for dialysis patients. What I thought was just a way for me to get hours to ultimately fulfill a requirement for physician assistant (PA) school ended up forever changing my life. During my time at my clinic, DaVita Littleton, in Colorado, I not only had the privilege of working with incredible patients and their families but their stories and support as I pursued PA were so memorable and life-changing. Getting to essentially have an additional family, especially through the hard days of the pandemic, has helped motivate me through the tough days of PA school and continues to motivate me as I begin my first job as a Nephrology PA. It is such an honor to get to come back full circle and work with these patients again in a new role.

During PA school, I also found running as an outlet and a way for me to decompress through the stress. So to have an opportunity to now run in honor of my patients (past and future) is a privilege that is hard to put into words. Training and running a marathon is a huge task, but it is one that pales in comparison to the struggle of living with chronic kidney disease and being dependent on life-long dialysis. My hope is not only to further awareness but to also help fundraise for those behind the scenes conducting research and creating resources for those living with chronic kidney disease; and in the hopes that one day we will find a way to make dialysis obsolete. I would LOVE to be "out of a job" one day - ha!

More information on kidney disease from the NKF:
Right now, 37 million American adults are living with kidney disease. 1 in 3 people are at risk for kidney disease. More than 1 in 7 people have it but aren’t aware.

The National Kidney Foundation was the first to identify kidney disease as a distinct, treatable illness. They developed the staged system of kidney disease diagnosis and treatment – a worldwide standard today – and release and update treatment guidelines to improve patient care.
