Why I Run

Kidney disease has been a fact of life for the Paul family for well over a quarter-century.

In the early-1980s and at the age of just 26, my Uncle Ron was diagnosed with kidney disease that would eventually lead to kidney failure. As the disease progressed and his kidneys failed, a transplant became necessary. And in 1990 Uncle Ron received the gift of life - a transplant from his brother, my Uncle Steve.

For 18 years, Uncle Steve's kidney kept Uncle Ron healthy and thriving. But by 2008 he needed another transplant. Uncle Ron's business partner and dearest friend, Kathy, offered the gift of life this time. Now, 16 years after his second kidney transplant and thanks to the exceptional generosity of Uncle Steve and Kathy, Uncle Ron has been healthy and laser-focused on spreading awareness about kidney disease and promoting kidney health.

My dad, Michael, was also diagnosed with kidney disease in the 1990s. After learning from Uncle Ron's experience and with access to medical care and careful monitoring for nearly 20 years, he remained healthy until 2017. But in June of 2017, his kidneys were failing and he needed a transplant. Thankfully, our cousin, Chris, was a perfect match and donated her kidney to my dad.

My dad and Uncle Ron have been exceptionally fortunate and can share their success stories. But not every case of kidney disease has a happy ending. After experiencing congestive heart failure and years of pulmonary problems, my grandpa - Pop Alan - went into kidney failure. After five years on dialysis, he passed away in October of 2012 from end-stage kidney failure.

I've experienced the tragedy that can befall families living with kidney disease, and I've celebrated the success that comes from great medical care and the extraordinary generosity of kidney donors. So I'm running to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation, to spread awareness and encourage kidney health, and to encourage organ donation.

Join me in making these advances possible by donating to my efforts!
