Why I Run

On Sunday, March 17th I will be running the 2024 New York City Half Marathon (my first race ever!) with Team Kidney because my family has been directly impacted by kidney disease. I run in memory of my dad, Gary Emery, who received a heart and kidney transplant on October 7, 2017, and sadly passed away due to complications on November 24, 2017.

I run to give back to the National Kidney Foundation, which continues to fight against kidney disease and make transplants more accessible. Right now, 37 million American adults are living with kidney disease, and I’m not okay with that. I run because 1 in 3 people are at risk for kidney disease. I run because more than 1 in 7 people have it but aren’t aware.

Since my dad’s passing, I have been trying to find a way to keep his memory alive. I know if he was still here with us, he would be so proud of me for training, raising funds, and pushing myself to run the New York City Half Marathon for Team Kidney to raise funds to help others who are affected by kidney disease.

My dad was one of the most generous, kind, and funniest people. Here is just one great example of his generosity: My grandma, my dad’s mom, would always spoil all her grandchildren for Christmas Eve with a bag full of toys for each grandchild. After my grandma passed away, everyone in the family assumed that there wouldn’t be the money to be able to get all the gifts for the grandchildren anymore. My Aunt Claudia, the oldest child in the family ended up taking over buying the gifts for the grandchildren. She received a surprise check/money each year to cover the cost of the gifts from “Grandmama’s Santa”. No one ever knew where the money came from. My dad passed away in November of 2017, and that December my Aunt Claudia did not receive a surprise check/money to cover the cost of the gifts for the grandchildren. We now know that it was my dad who was sending the check/money to pay for the gifts! My mom and dad had been married for over 36 years, and she didn’t even know he was sending the money.

He was a fighter and fought a hard fight. He was an amazing dad, husband, brother and friend. As I am running the 2024 New York City Half Marathon I will be thinking of him and everyone else that has been affected by kidney disease. I am running for those that can’t.

That’s why I am asking for your support as I run the New York City Half Marathon. By donating to the National Kidney Foundation through my fundraising page, you can help make a difference in the lives of those affected by kidney disease. Your generosity will support critical programs and services, from kidney screenings and education to transplant support and research.

Thank you for your support! Every contribution, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.

Join me in making these advances possible by donating to my efforts!

For a donation of $20, you can help choose my running playlist! When you donate, let me know the song of your choice, and I HAVE to listen to it during training & the half marathon! *Donate $40, you get to select two songs!
