Why I Run
In October 2020 within a few days my wife did lose both her kidneys due to a rare autoimmune disease. All of a sudden she was fully dependent of dialyses 3-4 times a week. In the summer of 2021 I decided to prepare myself and to become fit for being a potential kidney donor. I started running. Something I hadn't done since childhood. And to be honest, I was also way overweight!
I scheduled the tests to qualify for donation for April 2022. And to make sure I would be really fit I scheduled to run my first marathon that same month. In Rotterdam, The Netherlands I wanted to run my first marathon with 2 kidneys.
April 10, 2022 I ran my first marathon in 4h26. A week later I was admitted fully fit to the program as a potential donor. In the summer of 2022 I turned out to be an exact match as a donor for my wife! A rare but great situation. December 1, 2022 we had the transplant and I donated my left kidney to my wife. On January 1, 2023 I started my running training again. On April 16 I ran my 2nd marathon in Rotterdam. This time with one kidney.
I will run my 4th marathon with Team Kidney in November 2023 in New York! To show the world that you can live well with 1 kidney and under normal circumstances give you no restrictions. And that at the same time you give a fellow human being his normal life back.
I walk to raise funds that support the National Kidney Foundation, who was the first to identify kidney disease as a distinct, treatable illness. They developed the staged system of kidney disease diagnosis and treatment – a worldwide standard today – and release and update treatment guidelines to improve patient care.
Join me in making these advances possible by donating to my efforts!
Thank you for your support!
